About me

My name is Tessa van Swieten and its very nice to meet you.

I started Tessa van Swieten Vertalingen in Augustus 2008. I specialise in commercial translations from German, English and Spanish into Dutch. With me you can count on quality, personal attention, punctuality and reliability.

How do you become a German/English/Spanish – Dutch translator? Just follow your heart!

I have always had a passion for languages. This is why, during my secondary education, the languages Dutch, German, English, French, Greek and Latin interested me so much that I also took an elective course in Spanish.

As a translator, I am a member of the NGTV (Netherlands Society of Interpreters and Translators) and the IAPTI.

Directly after this I gained my master’s degree in German/Spanish – Dutch translation at the HIVT (Higher Institute for Translators and Interpreters) in Antwerp. During this course, I studied for a year at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Germersheim, Germany. I also studied for a second master’s degree in translation, specialising in ICT & English – Dutch translation, at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam as well as working as an in-house German/English – Dutch translator. As a qualified German/Spanish/English – Dutch translator, I became a member of the Netherlands Society of Interpreters and Translators (NGTV: Nederlands Genootschap van Tolken en Vertalers) and the International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (IAPTI).

As a trainee, I immediately started working on translations for the European Commission.

I gained experience translating documents about the European Union during a five- month traineeship as an in-house translator in the European Commission. Then, in 2008, I started working for myself and ever since have been providing translations for reputable translation agencies and a wide range of institutions, organisations and companies.

I can always put my Spanish to good use at home.

I am married to an Ecuadorian, so at home we speak Dutch, of course, but also a lot of Spanish. With Spanish and Dutch being spoken in equal amounts, you could say we have found a great relationship in language too. Yet another reason for me to do your Spanish-Dutch translations.

On the editorial staff for the NGTV magazine.

I take great pleasure in working on the editorial staff of the Linguaan, the professional journal of the Netherlands Society of Interpreters and Translators (Nederlands Genootschap van Tolken en Vertalers ).

I have written teaching material for the LOI and advise them on their translation courses.

In the past, I authored various educational materials for the HBO (higher professional education) translation courses. I also spent several years providing classes on using translation tools and translation in practice. Now I give advice on how to adapt translation courses to take optimum advantage of the latest developments in the translation sector.

‘Personal touch’

At Tessa van Swieten Vertalingen I will always speak to you personally, which makes things easier for you. I personally translate almost all the documents that are translated from German, English and Spanish into Dutch. Whenever necessary, I am happy to collaborate with one of my colleagues from my network. This may be because the pressure of work is too high to meet a tight deadline, but even then I will always thoroughly proofread the translation before delivering it to you. As a result I invariably put the finishing touches to the ranslation myself, so you can always contact me if you have any questions and comments.
